Third most used language…Hindi

Posted on January 11, 2007. Filed under: India, software |

Hindi is one of the oldest language or can be said as the direct decedent of the oldest language, Sanskrit. Recently we covered Sanskrit Voice, a website for sanskrit language. Here I am writing about the Government of India initiative for ease of computer related use of Hindi. And the best thing about it is that it is open source. One can go to Technology Development for Indian Language website and down load most of the tools. And if you are residing anywhere in India then you can submit the form for getting a free CD. I got my CD today, though I filled form some two months back, and this is only gory point.

These are the things which they will be sending you…

Browser is our very own firefox, I havent checked which version it is, but most probably it won’t be 2.0. But still if you have some one who is not well versed in english and you still want that they must use computer then you must get the CD. Other tools are also very nice and are working properly, without any bugs.

So if you want to Indianise your PC then you must get them as soon as possible.

And not only Hindi there are softwares for two other languages, that is Tamil and Telugu.

But other most prominent this which was there in background was that Indian government is trying to promote Linux OS in a sublime manner.

One fact which still stands that computer in a nation like India is still limited to educated class not because of the price factor but due to language factor. Government should try to join hands with Google to bring up online translation tool based on Google Translation.

Refreshing…Why am I using Windows?

Posted on January 5, 2007. Filed under: comments, software |

People outside my home tels me that Mac is better than Windows, but still one will find Windows in more computers than one would find a Mac. Why? Just because Windows was pirated more times than any other software in total history of computer, Why? Because what they made as an integral part for working on PC, it was the most easy way to make computer personal. Rules were never simple, and Microsoft was never nice. What Microsoft is fighting is anti-incumbency factor. Which Google would face pretty soon.
Okay, now look it this way. I spend most of my time on Orkut, one of my tab is for orkut, its like a ritual. I know that Orkut is not best of the lot, its not at all expressive, but still I am using it, Why? Just because all my friends are on Orkut, anf those friends who are not on orkut would join it soon because their other friends are on Orkut. This was not a funny statement, but instead I want you to look for the chain effect, or in other words it is peer pressure.
Apple, they are like A for computers, but still their policies are slightly flawed, they are not looking towards East, whereas Microsoft is certainly looking east. They are focusing on common man who is planning to buy a new computer, and mind you there are many new buyers, they are encouraging buyers to go for genuine Microsoft, and they have even got a competition for it. And of Apple, I dont remember when did I last saw an advertisement of Apple in newspaper. They might not be doing so in America, as they are popular over there, but in India they are not. I have no peer pressure to change and go for an Apple. And therefore I will continue using Microsoft, and presently I am using XP, I do lot of internet, and tries my level best for keeping my computer virus free, avoiding pit falls, and regularly updating my anti-virus.
And I keep on refreshing my desktop. How many times in a day do your refresh your desktop? I am thinking that I am becoming some sort of compulsive refresher.

Stellarium, a stellar software.

Posted on November 29, 2006. Filed under: software |

They say,

Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer. It
shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye,
binoculars or a telescope.
It is being used in planetarium projectors. Just set your coordinates and go.

I tried it and I found it as a nice addition to my PC. It is available for Mac., Win. as well as for Linux. As a user we have to just set the coordinates, and it show the sky view, showing in 3D. Its 3D is what we can call ‘A’ class. Since its a part of open source community we can certainly look forward to continous development. It certainly boasts of few rich features, which previous 2D similar softwares didnt provided.
Best thing which I can suggest you after downloading this software is opening a local planetarium sort of thing. Which you can certainly do woth the help of a projector and a computer.

My suggestion >>> Go get it.

Go 3-D

Posted on November 5, 2006. Filed under: software |

I was 10 when I got my first good PC, good because before it, what I had was called 486. New PC was Celeron, far slower than present standards, but that was the beginning of my ‘computer freak’ nature. But the point here is not about my love of computer but the result of this nature. I got my PC filled with 3-D Max, and I knew nothing about it, nothing and neither was in high interest zone. I soon realized and removed it from my PC(I am bad in drawing, worst in my family).
Now is the time to go 3-D, you can if your time permits can work on few freely available 3-D softwares.
DAZ Studio

First on is Blender(My personal favorite). Its under GNU general public license and is based on Python. Now what open source allows is well known is web community, it provides some regular updates, so we can say that it keeps on changing. Its really powerful. It have a very long list of features. More than that its library is also increasing and one thing which matters to me most is that IT IS NOT BIG. Yes it can not perform in the same way in which MAYA perform, but who needs Maya or for that matter 3ds max for regular office 3-D work.
Maya is like best best brush to paint, but I dont need best brush to paint my 1st grade drawing sheet. And let me tell you Blender is no 1st grade drawing brush.

DAZ Studio
This came to light much recently when it was covered on Download Squad by Ryan Carter.
Telling you all frankly I am not eligible to suggest any thing about DAZ Studio, as I haven’t downloaded it yet.

This is one art sample which is using DAZ Studio and is from their site.
This is what they have got to say

DAZ|Studio is a free software application that allows you to easily create beautiful digital art. You can use this software to load in people, animals, vehicles, buildings, props, and accessories to create digital scenes.

But I dont think that it is open source as it not mentioned any where on their site.
And yes its a tell-ware.
Thinking whats a tell-ware?
They simply want you to tell your friends about it, at least 2.

DAZ Productions has a made a committment to keep the DAZ|Studio core application free to the public for as long as possible. In order for this to be possible, DAZ relies on the revenues generated by the purchase of content available in the DAZ online store. The more people that purchase regularly from DAZ, the more development that can be subsidized and the longer the DAZ|Studio core will remain free.

If you want to know that what am I going to do, then let me tell you that I have already told 2 person and you are third. So I have already done my good.

My suggestion is that you should download both, try them, test them as per as your needs, and then uninstall them as I did when I first got 3ds max on my celeron.

Adobe Digital edition

Posted on October 24, 2006. Filed under: software |

What Adobe has to say about ADE, which is is in beta.

Adobe Digital Editions is a completely new way to read and manage eBooks and other digital publications. Digital Editions is built from the ground up as a lightweight, rich Internet application (RIA). Digital Editions works online and offline, and supports both PDF and XHTML-based content.

If anybody shall ask me a question that why is PDF so popular? Then my reply wont be ‘security’ but my one word answer would be ‘integration’, its so well integrated with browsers that you even dont feel it as some external programme. Where as Microsoft reader which i feel is more user friendly(at least for reading purpose) is not supported over internet. I even feel that same document when coverted over PDF is more bulky as compared to that converted for reader.
I think any competetior if launches an opensource variable of PDF wil be more successful than PDF itself. Lets see what happens next, but for now ADE is on my compuer and acting nicely. Its much like a competetior for MS Reader. Adobe tried something very similar long back with portable PDF reader, for mobile devices.

Its having nice looking black interface, but I wouldadvice you to wait fo few months andthen look for it to download but if you want to download it now the go here.
